People are constantly telling me; somewhat apologetically; that their doctors have told them that there is no research done on herbal supplements & that's why these folk aren't taking them or suggesting them to their physicians. What a LOT of HOOEY. First of all; for about 75 years now; there has been a European wealth of studies done in Herbals called "The German Commission E" reports. They are available; yearly even from Amazon.com for like $300. They painstakingly have gone through & done enormous amounts of clinical testing, anecdotal historical research, field work et al & they publish their findings.
Then there is Dr. Clayton's Herbs. The founder of that company has fostered research for over 40 years now & that research is ALSO available to the public & those that study herbal medicine.
There are actually a LOT of studies out there on various herbals from American, European, Canadian, Most certainly Asian & South American Universities/ Medical practitioners & pharmeceutical companies. I worked for several drug companies in the early '80's as I put myself through Penn State University. Since my interest was in Botany & Historical Botany at that; I was sent to work with various laboratories; studying the effects & growth habits of several medicinal herbs. That was in the 1980's. THAT, {I hated to say it} was over 20 years ago. All of these finding are out there. Actually , there is a WEALTH of information out on herbs; much more so than you can NORMALLY FIND for pharmeceuticals. YET, when a doctor is faced with a patient that asks about herbal formulations in their diet; the first thing that they'll bring up in defense of not using them or knowing about them; is that "there is little research done on them". BAH HUMBUG. Get yourself a physician that is taking continuing courses in his own field. There are scads of university based courses out there on holistic medicine as it pertains to Physical Therapy & other specialties. If your doctor can't keep up; its probably time for a NEW DOCTOR.

One more:

This really galls me. Many senior citizens out there have or are taking more than 20 pills a day & have been doing so for over 3 years. This can happen when a particular medicine causes a side effect but must be taken over a period time anyway. A doctor; instead of finding another formulation that might work better; will prescribe another pill to reduce the side effect of the first pill. Sometimes; the initial medication that caused the problem will have been changed but the pill taken for the side effects is continued. Oversight, it happens. If you are under the care of several doctors: {don't even get me started on specialists}; You can end up taking things that no longer matter to the initial complaint or you may end up having additional problems engendered by the very medicines that you are taking; simply because of the insidious phrase..."well, the doctor ordered it, so it must be that you need it." I've met people who have basically been overdosed on a product because nobody managed to notice that even though these people were documented as being allergic to a certain type of drug; the "new" drug based on the original source drug; was prescribed without the physician going all the way back through the patient history & noting the allergy/ sensitivity.

AND One more:

Specialists have a habit of blythly saying "stop all of the other things that you are doing (exercises prescribed by therapists, herbals, anything that you were doing to support your healthy lifestyle) & just take "my" medications & do what I say & all will be better." That's fine. Until all those other things that you were doing to support your health; like the exercise, other herbal supplements like vitamins, electrolytes etc fall down below the minimum supportable therapeutic levels & your body rebells. Then the sickness of the hour is blamed for all of the other woes that now visit you. How patently absurd. We are not an arm. We are not a spleen. We are a collection of body parts, organs & liquids that we need to maintain as a whole. When your oil needs changing in the car & you don't do it right away; the oil is not the only thing affected. WHY should we focus all of our attention on ONE body part or affliction at a time; when our overall HEALTH is in jeapordy?
